News: Supreme Court directs Centre to constitute tribunal to settle Pennaiyar river dispute between T.N. and Karnataka.
About Pennaiyar river
- Origin: It originates in the Nandi Hills in the Chikkaballapura district of Karnataka.
- It is also known as the South Pennar River, Dakshina Pinakini in Kannada, and Thenpennai, Ponnaiyar, or Pennaiyar in Tamil.
- States covered: It covers a large area in the State of Tamil Nadu besides the areas covered in the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
- Basin: Its basin is the second largest interstate East flowing river basin among the 12 basins lying between Pennar and Cauvery basins.
- Length: It is the second longest river in Tamil Nadu (497 km) after the Kaveri.
- Major tributaries: Markandeya River, Varaha Nadhi, Pambar River and Pampar River
- Falls into: It flows southward for 80 km through Karnataka to northwestern Tamil Nadu, where it turns and flows southeastward to enter the Bay of Bengal at Cuddalore.
- Major dams: Krishnagiri Dam, Kelavarapalli Dam, Sathanur Dam (largest)
- Important cities: Bangalore, Hosur, Tiruvannamalai, and Cuddalore are the important cities on the banks of this river.
