Plea to raise minimum age for marriage

Context:

A petition to raise the minimum age for marriage has been filed in the Supreme Court

Details

  • According to petitioner advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay “fertility depends on the age of marriage’’.
  • Therefore, it is necessary to raise the minimum age for marriage for men and women to 25 years and 21 years
  • The current minimum age for marriage for male and females is 21 years and 18 years respectively
  • The plea said the state had failed to implement effective population control strategy or programme to ensure the well-being of citizens, which was under peril due to the rampant rise in population.
  • The plea is likely to be listed before a Bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra.
