News: The company’s PowerBank-50 successfully powered a payload aboard Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 ‘Aagaman’ mission.
About PowerBank-50
- Designed by: It is an indigenously developed satellite battery pack designed by the Hyderabad-based spacetech startup TakeMe2Space.
- It is designed specifically for small satellites.
- It is India’s first indigenously developed satellite battery to achieve the coveted ‘flight heritage’ status.
- Note: Flight heritage refers to components or technologies that have been successfully used and proven reliable in the harsh space environment.
- It powered an experimental payload from Cosmoserve Space on the orbital adjustment module of Vikram-1 at about 450 km altitude.
- Features:
- It includes lithium-ion cells, battery management electronics, cell heaters and an aluminium enclosure.
- It has been designed for the harsh conditions of space such as vacuum, radiation, and extreme temperature fluctuations.
- The intelligent battery management system capable of monitoring performance, balancing cells and transmitting battery health data to operators on the ground.
- Its built-in thermal management system keeps it operational during the extreme cold of orbit.
- Weight: It weights 380 grams and its size is of a paperback book.
- Storage: It stores more than 50 watt-hours of energy.
- It incorporates some of the highest energy-density cells available for small satellites.
- Cost: It costs a little over Rs 1 lakh.

- Application: Multiple PowerBank-50 units can be stacked together to power CubeSats and microsatellites, with an operational life of up to five years in low-Earth orbit.
