Context: Employment generation will remain a major challenge before the present government.
Present status of employment in India
International Labour Organisation (ILO) report, has provided with the following facts
1) Non-agricultural economy employed 11 crore workers during October 2022 to September 2023 in comparison to about 9.8 crore workers during 2021-22.
2) Share of manufacturing employment was stagnant, at around 12%-14%
Citigroup report too said the current rate of job creation will not be sufficient to meet future demand.
Periodic Labour Force Surveys show that 45.76% of the workforce was engaged in agriculture and allied sectors in 2022-23.
What steps can be taken to handle the employment challenge in India?
Technological Innovations: Innovations should aim to reduce workloads without hindering livelihoods.
Agricultural Industrialization: The government should consider more public and cooperative investments to create jobs and ease the burden on farmers.
Collaborative Approach: The government should involve private and public sectors, labor unions, States, and political parties to design a growth model focused on job creation.
