Thinker of the day || Elinor Ostrom

Work – Governing the Commons

View

Ostrom challenged the belief that common resources can be managed effectively only through government control or privatization. She demonstrated how communities can develop their own institutions to manage shared resources.
Self-Governance: Local communities can create rules to manage common resources. Collective Action: Cooperation among citizens can solve problems that individuals cannot address alone.
Polycentric Governance: Multiple, relatively autonomous decision-making centres can work together to solve public problems.
Local Participation: Rules are more effective when resource users participate in making them.
Accountability: Monitoring and graduated sanctions help ensure compliance with community rules. In
Effective governance can emerge through cooperation and self-organized institutions, not merely through centralized control.
