THINKER OF THE DAY || MARILYN LODEN

Work – Feminine Leadership

Views

  • Women face invisible institutional and organisational barriers that prevent them from reaching senior leadership positions, despite having the required qualifications and capabilities.

  • Women’s underrepresentation in leadership cannot simply be attributed to lack of confidence, ambition or competence. Organisational culture, gender stereotypes and discriminatory practices play a major role.

  • In Feminine Leadership (1985), Loden challenged the assumption that successful leadership must follow traditionally masculine models. She highlighted the value of cooperative, empathetic and consensus-oriented leadership.

  • Formal equality is insufficient when informal workplace practices, male-dominated networks and biased promotion systems continue to disadvantage women.

  • Organisations must actively reform recruitment, promotion, leadership development and workplace policies to ensure equal opportunities.

In Indian Administration

Women in Civil Services – Women’s entry into civil services has increased, but representation in senior decision-making positions remains an important concern.

Political Representation: The 106th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2023, providing for one-third reservation for women in Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, seeks to address structural barriers

Increasing women’s representation is not enough institutions must also transform the organisational structures and cultures that restrict their advancement.

KEYWORD OF THE DAY || TECHNICAL RATIONALITY

It refers to an approach to decision making in which problems are addressed through scientific knowledge, technical expertise, logical analysis and the application of established methods to achieve predetermined goals.
