Punjab and Haryana likely to reap a bumper crop of wheat

  1. Punjab and Haryana are expected to reap a bumper harvest of wheat due to an extended winter and good rain spells during the ongoing Rabi season.
  2. In India, there are two major cropping seasons: a) Kharif and b) Rabi. Another cropping season Zaid i.e. summer season (March to June). Examples of Zaid cops are watermelon, bitter gourd etc.
  3. The kharif cropping season is from July –October during the south-west monsoon. Major Kharif crops include rice, maize, sorghum, groundnut etc.
  4. Rabi cropping season extends from October-March (winter). Major Rabi crops are wheat, barley, oats etc. Wheat is the main Rabi crop in India. It is sown between late October and December; while the harvesting starts from April onwards.
  5. The Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES), Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture releases four Advance Estimates and a Final Estimates of production of major agricultural crops in India.
