News: World Meteorological Report (WMO) report ‘Statement of Climate 2024’ states that January-September 2024 global mean surface temperature was 1.54-degree Celsius above the pre-industrial average, making 2024 the warmest year.

1. World Meteorological Organisation (WMO): It is a specialised agency of the United Nations that aims at promoting international cooperation in meteorology, climatology, hydrology and related fields.

2. Important functions of WMO include monitoring and predicting global weather, supporting climate change research and mitigation, developing early warning systems, standardising climate data, promoting policy advocacy and coordination.

3. The World Meteorological Congress is the highest decision-making body of WMO, consisting of representatives of all members. While the day-to-day activities are managed by the Executive Council.

4. WMO has 193 member countries.

5. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
