Explanation – The Paris Principles are a set of international standards which guide the establishment and operation of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs). These principles were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 and are formally known as the “Principles Relating to the Status of National Institutions”. The Paris Principles set out six main criterions that NHRIs are expected to meet. These are: Mandate and competence, Autonomy from Government, Independence guaranteed by a Statute or Constitution, Pluralism, Adequate Resources; and adequate powers of investigations.
