Explanation – The Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution deals with the official languages of India. It originally included 14 languages when the Constitution was adopted in 1950. Over time, amendments have expanded the list to 22 languages as of now. These languages are recognized for their cultural and linguistic importance and are referenced in Articles 344(1) and 351 of the Constitution. The schedule promotes linguistic diversity and ensures representation of various linguistic groups in India.
