Explanation – The Food Waste Index Report 2024 is a joint publication by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). As per the report, in 2022, over a billion meals were wasted per day across the globe. Households are the most significant contributor to food waste (60%), followed by food services (28%) and retail (12%). The report emphasized the need to enhance data infrastructure to track progress toward meeting Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 of halving food waste by 2030, particularly in retail and food services.
