Q. With reference to Tropical Cyclones, consider the following statements:
1. In this, counter clockwise wind flow in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise wind flow in the Southern Hemisphere.
2. Present of Corolis force is not required for the formation of these cyclones.
3. It is characterized by a low-pressure centre.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

[A] 1 and 2 only

[B] 2 and 3 only

[C] 1 and 3 only

[D] 1, 2 and 3

Answer: C

Statement 1 & 3 are correct

Conditions required for formation of tropical cyclones:

  1. A consistent source of heat as tropical cyclones is thermally induced low-pressure systems.
  1. Large sea surface with a temperature higher than 27° C which is possible only during the late summers i.e. September, October, and November.
  2. Presence of the Coriolis force.
  3. Small variations in the vertical wind speed.
  4. A pre-existing weak low-pressure area or low-level-cyclonic circulation.
  5. Upper divergence above the sea level system.
