News:Recently,the strawberry finch,a bird has been spotted in the vicinity of Akkulam Lake in Kerala.
Facts:
About Strawberry Finch:
- Strawberry finch is also known as red avadavat (Amandava amandava) or red munia.
- It is a sparrow-sized bird of the family Estrildidae.It is listed as Least Concern by IUCN.
- It is usually found in the open fields and grasslands of tropical Asia and is popular as a cage bird in their breeding season.
- The species name of amandava or avadavat has been derived from the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat from where these birds were exported into the pet trade in former times.
