News: The Union Cabinet has approved the revision of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP). The scheme has been allocated a total outlay of ₹3,880 crore for two years, covering 2024-25 and 2025-26. Revised Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP)
About Revised Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP)
- The Government of India has been implementing the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) nationwide since 2022, aiming to mitigate risks to animal health through various measures.
- Three Main Components of LHDCP
- National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP): This component focuses on preventing and controlling major animal diseases.
- Livestock Health & Disease Control (LH&DC): This component includes three sub-components:
- Critical Animal Disease Control Programme (CADCP): Aims to control critical livestock diseases.
- Establishment and Strengthening of Veterinary Hospitals & Dispensaries – Mobile Veterinary Units (ESVHD-MVU): Provides mobile veterinary healthcare services to ensure doorstep delivery of livestock treatment.
- Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD): Supports state governments in managing and controlling animal diseases.
- Pashu Aushadhi (New Component): This initiative will improve the availability of veterinary medicines through PM-Kisan Samriddhi Kendra and Cooperative Societies.
Key Benefits
- The revised programme will help in preventing and controlling major livestock diseases, including Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Brucellosis, Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), Classical Swine Fever (CSF), and Lumpy Skin Disease.
- The scheme will facilitate livestock immunization, disease surveillance, and upgradation of healthcare facilities.
- The introduction of Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs) will provide doorstep veterinary healthcare services, ensuring that farmers can access treatment easily.
- By improving animal health and productivity, the scheme will enhance rural employment opportunities, promote entrepreneurship, and prevent economic losses for farmers due to disease outbreaks.
