- Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will impose a new rule on eateries and restaurants.This rule will prohibit eateries using more than 50 litres of oil from using the same batch of cooking oil for more than three times.
- The consumption of Used Cooking Oil(UCO) poses adverse health effects. During frying, several properties of oil are altered and Total Polar Compounds(TPC) are formed on repeated frying.The toxicity of these compounds is associated with several diseases such as (a)hypertension, (b)atherosclerosis (c)Alzheimer’s disease and (d)liver diseases.
- Used Cooking Oil(UCO) is a potential feedstock for biodiesel.The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had launched RUCO (Repurpose Used Cooking Oil),an initiative that will enable collection and conversion of used cooking oil to bio-diesel. Biodiesel is a renewable, biodegradable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils or animal fats.
- Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
- It has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India. FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.
