News: A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court has closed habeas corpus proceedings initiated by a senior citizen accusing Isha Foundation, a non-profit spiritual organization, of holding his two daughters captives.

1. Habeas Corpus: It is a Latin word which literally means ‘to have the body of’.

2. It is a writ issued by the Supreme Court or the High Court to a person or entity who has detained another person, to produce the body of the latter before it.

3. It primarily acts as a writ of enquiry, where the court examines the cause and legality of the detention. If the detention is found to be illegal, the court sets the detained person free.

4. It can be issued against both public authorities and private individuals.

5. The other 4 writs mentioned in the constitution include Mandamus, Prohibition, Certiorari, Quo-Warranto.
