News: Indian Naval Ships Sahyadri and Kulish arrived at Subic Bay, Philippines to participate in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM)-Plus Joint Cooperation Activity (JCA).
About Subic Bay
- Subic Bay is an embayment of the South China Sea.
- It is located on the southwestern coast of Luzon Island in the Philippines.
- It is situated 35 miles northwest of Manila Bay and extends into the Luzon coastline.
- The city of Olongapo is located near the head of Subic Bay.
- Historical background: From 1901 to 1992, the United States operated a major naval base at Subic Bay in the Philippines.
- During World War II, Japan captured the base in 1942, and Allied forces recaptured it in 1944.
- Its strategic location made it important for U.S. operations during the Vietnam War and the Cold War.
- In 1992, the U.S. handed over the base to the Philippines, which developed it into a free port, industrial and tourism zone.
- In 2012, the Philippines allowed limited access to U.S. warships at the Subic Bay port.
