Why in the News?

As per new research, last year’s northern hemisphere summer was the hottest on record and the warmest in nearly 2,000 years.

About Recent Studies Highlighting Historical Warmth of 2023 Summer

1. Research indicates that the summer of 2023 experienced the highest temperatures in nearly 2,000 years, surpassing the hottest summers recorded since the 1940s and even historical data going back to the mid-1800s.

2. Significant Temperature Rise: Last summer’s temperatures across lands between 30 and 90 degrees north latitude were on average 2.07 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

3. Impact of El Nino: The El Nino climate pattern significantly contributed to last year’s heat, leading to prolonged and more severe heatwaves and drought conditions.

4. Health Impacts of Heatwaves: Deadly toll of heatwaves has resulted in 150,000 deaths annually between 1990 and 2019 across 43 countries. More than half of these have occurred in Asia.
