The joint family is the bedrock on which Hindu social organisation is built. Iravati Karve defined the joint family as a group of people who generally live under one roof, who eat food , cooked in one kitchen , and share property in common. However , over time and specifically post liberalisation , the Indian family has been subjected to stresses and strains. The process of industrialization and the consequent urbanization and commercialization have drastic impacts on the structure of family.
According to census 2011 , of all the household , nuclear family constituted 70% and the extended and joint family claim only 20% of the households. Joint family was mostly the norm in India since being an agrarian economy, the family stood to gain economically if it’s members held together as the family was a land owning unit. Further ,joint family gave to its members a sense of security which emanates from a common pool of resources, which included not only land , but seeds, agricultural implements and labour Nevertheless a long tradition of living in a structure where kinship values are of prime importance generates sentiments which might be difficult to abandon even when they appear to be largely irrelevant in a changed economic ambiance. Hence it could be said that the life cycle of a joint family is not just dependent on economic factors but also social and kinship values. However post 1991 with liberal economic forces being dominat , power structure within the family has altered and nuclear families have sprouted. Even then social bonding and kinship ties cannot just be refuted in a larger analysis of Indian joint family system.
