News: The Sangon community of Arunachal Pradesh launched a conservation initiative to protect the Transcaspian marinka species found in the region.
About Transcaspian Marinka

- About: The Transcaspian marinka is a medium‑sized, ray-finned freshwater fish.
- It is also known as the Himalayan ray-finned fish.
- Family: It belongs to the carp family (Cyprinidae).
- Class: It belongs to the infraclass Teleostei (modern bony fishes) and exemplifies the most advanced stage of evolutionary adaptations developed for survival in high-altitude aquatic environments.
- Scientific name: Its scientific name is Schizothorax pelzami
- Distribution: It is mainly found in Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Iran.
- It is found in India in the region of Arunachal Pradesh. In Arunachal Pradesh, it is called Ngarsing in the Nyishi language.
- Habitat: It inhabits fast‑flowing rivers, springs and qanats.
- Features:
- Size: It can grow up to 36 cm long.
- Diet: It feeds on insects and plant material.
- Conservation status:
- IUCN: Least Concern
About Ray-Finned Fish

- Ray-finned fish, also known as actinopterygians, belong to the class Actinopterygii (Bony fish).
- It constitutes nearly 99% of the over 30,000 living species of fish.
- Habitat: It inhabits a variety of extreme environments, including high-altitude lakes and streams, desert springs, subterranean caves, ephemeral pools, polar seas, and the depths of the ocean.
- Features of Ray-Finned Fish:
- They are characterised by fins supported by delicate bony rays, which provide elegant and efficient movement in water.
- Their fins perform specialised functions such as hovering, rapid acceleration, manoeuvring, and prey capture.
- They exhibit an extraordinary diversity of sizes, shapes, and colours, ranging from small goldfish to large marlins.
- They possess an advanced skeletal structure that enhances flexibility, agility, and precise locomotion.
- Diet: It exhibits diverse feeding habits and may be herbivorous, carnivorous, omnivorous, zooplanktivorous, or detritivorous. Their diet is closely linked to their body shape, mouth structure, teeth, and digestive system
- Behaviour: Many ray-finned fishes exhibit migratory behaviour.
- Communication: They perceive and interact with their surroundings through five primary sensory mechanisms: vision, mechanoreception, chemoreception, electroreception, and magnetoreception.
