U.S. fails in its UN bid to decry Hamas movement

News

A US backed UN resolution to condemn the militant Islamic group Hamas, which controls Gaza, failed to win the required two-thirds majority in the U.N. General Assembly. India also abstained from voting on the resolution.

Important facts:

About Hamas:

  1. Hamas is an acronym for Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyya, or Islamic Resistance Movement. It is a Palestinian Islamist political organization and militant group that has been in operation since 1987. The movement started as an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt
  2. Hamas has been the de facto ruler in the Gaza Strip since 2007, after defeating Fatah party in parliamentary elections.
  3. The biggest difference between the two movements today is their attitude towards Israel. The Hamas believes in armed resistance, while, Fatah believes in negotiating with Israel and has completely ruled out using attacks.
  4. Hamas’s charter originally called for the destruction of Israel. It was revised in 2017 to allow for acceptance of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip rather than the entire territory, though Hams still refuses to recognize the legitimacy of the Israeli state.
