Here is the 7th Mains Marathon Botany Optional Test.


We have decided to move section wise with the basic understanding of each topic of every paper.

In the mid-September we will do the complete paper every week so that you can get the feel to complete the paper before real exam (October 2017).

Hope you like the initiative.

Paper 2 : Section A

Topics: Cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, evolution, plant breeding, biotechnology, biostatics.


Question 1: What do you mean by Lathyrism? How can it be overcomed?

Question 2: Do all organisms have the same number of genes? Is the number of genes proportional to the size of the organism? Comment.

Question 3: Write about the different methods of plant breeding for drought resistance.

Question 4: How is the vitamin content enhanced in crops? Give a brief note on enhancing vitamin A.

Question 5: Do you think that gene duplication and polyploidy provide a mechanism for evolution?  Do you agree that new functions arise by gene duplication provide? Justify your answer.

Question 6: What are the enzymes which are used in cloning technique? Give suitable examples of applications of technique.

Question 7: Explain the major evolutionary events leading to developments of multi cellular land plants.

Question 8: What is phylogeny? Explain any one molecular tool used to understand phylogeny.

Question 9: Write a brief account on population improvement through progeny and recurrent selection.

Question 10: Discuss dissociation and re-association kinetics of DNA. Comment on its significance.

Question 11: Describe the mechanism of action of DNA polymerase operating on the two template strands and the effect this has on the synthesis of the lagging versus the leading strand.

Question 12: How do the two exonuclease activities of DNA polymerase differ from one another? What are their respective roles in replication?

Question 13: Describe the factors that contribute to the high fidelity of DNA replication.

Question 14: Origins of replication tend to have a region that is very rich in A-T base pairs. What function do you suppose these sections might serve?

Question 15: Describe the events that occur in the cell during pro-metaphase and during anaphase.

Question 16: What type of force- generating mechanism might be responsible for chromosome movements during anaphase?

Question 17: What is the mechanism of formation of the second messenger IP3? What is the relationship between the formation of IP3 and an elevation of intracellular [Ca2+]?

Question 18: Explain goodness of fit of data with special reference to χ 2 – test.

Question 19: Distinguish between regression and correlation. Explain its importance in experimental data analysis.

Question 20: What is polyribosome? How does its formation differ in prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
