Overview of the UPSC Prelims Question Paper 

  • The prelims exam is the first stage of the UPSC Civil Services Examination and serves as a qualifying round for the Mains exam.
  • The UPSC Prelims Exam consists of two papers, both conducted in a multiple-choice question (MCQ) format.
  • The first paper is General Studies Paper I, which tests the candidate’s knowledge on a wide range of subjects including history, geography, polity, economics, environment, and current affairs.
  • The second paper is the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) or General Studies Paper II, which assesses the candidate’s aptitude and analytical skills.
  • Only those candidates who secure the cutoff marks in General Studies Paper I and the qualifying marks in CSAT will be eligible to appear for the Mains exam.
  • The results of the prelims exam are crucial as they determine the candidates’ progress in the selection process.

Prelims Exam Pattern Details

  • General Studies Paper I:
    • Total Questions: 100
    • Total Marks: 200
    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Negative Marking: -0.66 marks for each incorrect answer
  • CSAT (General Studies Paper II):
    • Total Questions: 80
    • Total Marks: 200
    • Duration: 2 hours
    • Negative Marking: -0.83 marks for each incorrect answer
    • Qualifying Marks: 33% (66.67 marks out of 200)
