UPSC CSE Prelims Exam 2025 Pattern

For those, who have not appeared in the UPSC Exam and wondering, what is the pattern of UPSC Prelims Exam. Following is the pattern.

The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination consists of two papers, both of which are compulsory. The exam serves as a screening test and the marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination are not counted for determining the final merit. Here is a detailed explanation of the pattern:

General Studies Paper-I (GS-I)

  • Total Marks: 200
  • Number of Questions: 100
  • Type of Questions: Objective (Multiple Choice Questions)
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Subjects Covered:
    • Current events of national and international importance.
    • History of India and Indian National Movement.
    • Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
    • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
    • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
    • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization.
    • General Science.

General Studies Paper-II (CSAT)

  • Total Marks: 200
  • Number of Questions: 80
  • Type of Questions: Objective (Multiple Choice Questions)
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Subjects Covered:
    • Comprehension.
    • Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
    • Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
    • Decision-making and problem-solving.
    • General mental ability.
    • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level).
    • Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc.) (Class X level).

Key Points to Note

  • Negative Marking: There is a penalty for wrong answers in both papers. One-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as a penalty.
  • Qualifying Paper: Paper-II (CSAT) is of qualifying nature and candidates need to score a minimum of 33% (66 marks) to qualify.
  • Merit Ranking: The merit ranking in the Preliminary Examination is based on the marks obtained in GS Paper-I alone, provided the candidate has qualified in GS Paper-II.
