News: After the US President Joe Biden’s administration allowed the Ukraine to use Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), Ukraine’s army employed them to strike into Russia.
1. The Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) is a surface-to-surface ballistic missile, which can hit targets at up to 300 kms.
2. ATACMS was built by the US-based Lockheed Martin Corporation.
3. It is powered by solid rocket propellant and follows a ballistic path, which makes it difficult to intercept.
4. There are various variants of ATACMS. Ukraine is likely to have M39A1 Block IA ATACMS and M57 ATACMS.
5. The US has authorised Ukraine to use ATACMS after Russia decided to deploy North Korean ground troops to supplement its own forces.
6. The use of ATACMS will enable Ukraine’s military to strike deep within Russia.
