- A study published in Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Discussion has identified a combination factors which led to the 2018 Kerala Flood Disaster

Factors contributing to Kerala Flood Disaster
- Above normal summer (May-August) rainfall: In 2018, summer rainfall in Kerala has been 2,290 mm (53% above normal). This has been the third wettest year for Kerala since 1901.
- Extreme rainfall events during monsoon season: Kerala experienced a significantly higher number of extreme rainfall events till August.
- Due to higher than normal rainfall, major reservoirs in the Kerala had over 90% reservoir storage even before the onset of extreme rainfall events
