UPPSC conducts the examination for Provincial Civil Service Examination known as Uttar Pradesh Combined State/Upper Subordinate (UPPCS) Exam in the Uttar Pradesh State. It is the exam for the highest government services in the state and is also most preferred after the UPSC IAS examination.

UPPCS Age limit
Following is the upper and lower age limit for sitting in this examination:
Minimum Age limit- 21 years
Maximum Age Limit – 40 years
For Example, the candidates born before July 2, 1981, and after July 1, 2000 were not eligible to appear in the UPPSC 2021 exam.
About UPPCS Exam Criterion
The process of the examination conducted by UPPSC for PCS is similar to UPSC IAS Exam. The UPPCS exam has three stages selection process and the candidates must pass all three stages of the UPPCS exam to qualify for the services. The stages of the selection process are given below.
1. Prelims Exam: It is the first stage of the UPPCS selection process. UPPCS Prelims exmination consists of 2 papers: 1) General Studies Paper 1 2) CSAT Paper 2
2. Main Exam (written): UPPSC conducts the UPPCS main exam on the pattern of the UPSC Main (written) exam. The UPPSC UPPCS main exam consists of 8 papers in total: 4 General Studies Paper, 1 essay paper, 2 optional papers, and one Hindi paper.
3. Interview: The personality test is the final stage of the UPPCS examination. This stage has been assigned 100 marks for the personality test, and it is an important stage in deciding the final rank. The questions asked in the interview stage are mainly from current events and the Detail Application Form (DAF) filled at the time of the mains exam.
Nature and Process of UPPSC Exam
UPPCS Examination is also known as ‘Combined State/Separate Upper Subordinate Services Examination (General Selection/Special Selection)’. Every year a lot of students appear in this prestigious state exam. However the selection ratio remains meager due to the fierce competition .Presently this is the most popular exam conducted by Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC). The present article discusses the nature and various phases of exam along with the process of these phases.
Nature of Exam:
This competitive examination conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission generally consists of three levels sequentially-
Preliminary Examination – Objective in Nature
Main Examination – Conventional Written (Descriptive) in Nature
Interview – This is a personality test which is oral in nature
Exam Process:
Process of Preliminary Examination:
First of all, a notification related to these examinations is issued by the commission. The notification comprises of detailed information regarding number of posts, syllabus and schedule of the exam etc. Just after the issuing the notification, the process of registration and filling the online application form start. The detailed information regarding the process of filling the form is given under the heading ‘How to apply online?’ under the ‘Notification’.
A detailed description of various aspects related to the said examination is given in the notification. Therefore, it is beneficial to study the detailed notification before filling the form.
- Preliminary examination is usually conducted after 3 to 4 months once the form filling process is over.
- This preliminary examination is conducted on the same day at different centers of the state as decided by the commission.
- This preliminary examination conducted by the commission is objective (multiple choice) in nature, in which one has to choose the correct option out of four possible options (a, b, c and d) given for each question.
- An OMR sheet is provided along with the question paper. TheOMR sheet consists of bubbles that student need to fill for all right options. The OMR sheet also contains certain other information of student such as roll number, registration number and question set etc. The OMR sheet has to be filled with black or blue ball point pen at the appropriate place in the respective circle given in front of it.
- There is a provision of one third negative marking for every wrong answer in the prelims examination . If a candidate gives more than one answer to a question, then that answer is treated as wrong.
- The question papers are given in two languages (Hindi and English). In case of any dispute regarding the language of the question, preference is given to the questions printed in English language.
- The commission has changed the nature of this preliminary examination in the year 2012, according to which the question paper of CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) was adopted instead of the optional subject (objective) asked in the second paper.
- At present, two compulsory papers (General Studies and CSAT respectively) are asked in this examination . The prelims exam is conducted on the same day in two different shifts (from 9.30 to 11.30 A.M. and 2.30 to 4.30 P.M. respectively).
- The first paper is of General Studies, in which the total number of questions is 150 and the maximum marks are 200.
- The second paper is of CSAT (Civil Service Aptitude Test), in which the total number of questions is 100 and the maximum marks are 200.
- Since the year 2016 CSAT paper of the preliminary examination of has been made qualifying only. It is mandatory to get minimum 33% marks to be successful in this paper.
- The order of merit of the candidates in this examination is determined on the basis of their marks in the first paper of General Studies.
- Generally 70-75% marks are required to pass this exam, but sometimes this percentage can be less depending on the difficulty level of the questions.
- The preliminary examination is qualifying in nature. The marks obtained in this are not added with the marks of main exam or interview.
Process of Main Exam
For the successful candidates in the preliminary examination, the main examination is organized at various centers set by the commission in Allahabad and Lucknow. Main exam is conducted subject wise for more than one day.
- UPPCS (Selective) Main exam paper is divided into two parts: Compulsory and Optional
- Among the compulsory subjects- Four papers of General Studies and question papers of General Hindi and Essay. All of these papers are of written or descriptive nature.
- Optional Subject – The student at the time of filling form has to choose one subject as an optional out of the given subjects. There are two papers of the selected optional subject . The two papers of optional subject are also of subjective nature.
- From the year 2015 onwards, along with the nature of questions asked in the optional subject of this main examination, the answer-sheet has also been changed accordingly.
- Now, where each question is divided into different sections, the answer to all these questions has to be written in the prescribed words in the prescribed place in the answer-book given by the commission in a maximum time limit of three hours (2 sections in all the optional subject papers) There will be four questions in each section. Candidate will have to answer five questions in total. Two questions each from each section are required to be attempted.)
- Total 1500 marks has been allotted for the UPPCS Main exam.
- A maximum of 800 marks (200 for each paper) is fixed for all the four papers of General Studies. The duration to solve each of these papers will be 3 hours.
- 150 marks are allotted for compulsory General Hindi and 150 marks for Essay.
- The examination of both the papers (total 2 papers) of an optional subject is conducted in two different shifts (from 9.30 to 12.30 P.M. and 2.00 to 5.00 P.M. respectively) on the date fixed by the commission.
- 200-200 marks are allotted for both the optional subject papers (2 papers in total). That is, 400 marks have been fixed for a total of 2 papers of an optional subject.
- Essay can be written in Hindi, English or Urdu.
Interview Process
- The candidates selected in the main examination usually have to appear for an interview before the commission after one month.
- The personality of the candidates is tested during the interview. The interview consists of oral questions asked by the members of the commission .
- A total of 100 marks are allotted for the interview in (select).
- Merit list is finally prepared on the basis of the aggregate of marks obtained in main examination and interview.
- The list of finally selected candidates is released usually one week after the completion of the entire interview.
- The candidates selected for appointment are also required to pass the medical tests as stipulated in the rules.
