Writ is a formal written command issued by a court to protect the fundamental rights of an individual against any arbitrary decision of the executive, quasi-judicial or judicial authority.
Any warrant, orders, directions, and so on, issued by the Supreme Court or the High court are called writs.
A writ petition can be filed in the Supreme Court (Article 32) or a High Court (Article 226).
