News: Tamil Nadu has become the 11th State in the country to successfully undertake the “One Nation One Ration Card system” reform stipulated by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.

About One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) System: It envisages inter-state portability of ration cards under National Food Security Act, 2013(NFSA). Its implementation ensures the availability of ration and other welfare benefits to the migrant workers and their families across the country.

Features: Under this, the migratory ration cardholders can take their entitled food grains from any Fair Price Shop(FPS) in the country by using their ration card issued in their home States/ UTs after biometric authentication on electronic Point of Sale(ePoS) devices installed at the FPSs.

Benefits of One Nation One Ration Card:

  • Empowers migrant Population: It empowers the migratory population especially the persons who frequently change their place of dwelling to get their entitled quota of food grains from any e-PoS enabled fair Price Shops.
  • Better Targeting: The reform enables the States to better-targeting of beneficiaries, eliminating bogus/ duplicate/ineligible card-holders resulting in enhanced welfare and reduced leakage.
