Why in the News?
Recently, Nepal, India, and Bangladesh signed a Tripartite Agreement for Cross-Border Electricity Trade.
About tripartite agreement
1. Parties to the agreement: Nepal, India, and Bangladesh
2. Nepal will export surplus electricity to Bangladesh through India from June 15 to November 15 every year. India will make arrangements to supply electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh.
3. First Phase of Electricity Export: Nepal will export 40 MW of hydroelectricity to Bangladesh via Indian territory in the first phase. The price of electricity has been set at 6.4 cents per unit.
4. Economic Impact: Nepal is expected to earn USD 9.2 million annually from this electricity export. (According to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) officials).
