News: Madan B Lokur, retired judge of the Supreme Court of India, has been appointed as the chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council (IJC) for a four-year term.

  • It was established by the UN General assembly to ensure independence, professionalism and accountability in the administration of justice system of the United Nations. 
  • Composition: It comprises of 5 members 
    • Staff representative 
    • Management representative 
    • Two distinguished external jurists 
    • Distinguished jurist, who acts as the chairperson 
  • Appointment:  
    • Members are appointed by the Secretary General 
    • Chairperson is chosen by consensus by four other members 
  • Functions: 
    • Monitoring the independence and impartiality of the UN’s Internal Justice System, which includes Office of Staff Legal Assistance, UN Disputes Tribunal (UNDT) and UN Appeals Tribunal (UNAT) 
    • Recommends candidates for the positions of judges in UNDT and UNAT 
    • Advises the General Assembly regarding the administration of the justice system
