  • The Andaman Sea is a marginal sea of the eastern Indian Ocean, situated to the southeast of the Bay of Bengal.
  • It is bordered by:
    • India (Andaman and Nicobar Islands) to the west
    • Myanmar to the north and northeast
    • Thailand to the east
    • Malaysia to the southeast
  • It includes the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (India) and Mergui Archipelago (Myanmar). These islands act as a natural barrier between the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
  • It forms part of the Sunda Plate, which is bordered by the Indian Plate to the northwest and the Australian Plate to the southeast.
  • It is located in a seismically active region with frequent earthquakes and tsunamis.
  • It is a major shipping route connecting the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean through the Strait of Malacca. It supports fisheries, tourism, and offshore oil and gas exploration.
  • The Andaman Sea hosts diverse ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests, which serve as vital habitats and support a wide range of species.
