News: Recently, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed that the Water Resources Department (WRD) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) must ensure that no further dumping of debris, sand or construction material takes place in the Cooum river in Chennai.
About Cooum River
- Origin: The Cooum River originates in Cooum village in Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.
- It is also sometimes known as the Thiruvallikenni River.
- It trifurcates the city of Chennai and separates Northern Chennai from Central Chennai.
- Course of river: It runs east for a distance of about 65 km and confluences with the Bay of Bengal near Marina Beach, Chennai.
- Fed by: It is fed by the Kosasthalaiyar River surplus from Kesavaram Anicut through the old Bangaru channel and the Palar River surplus from Palar Anicut through the Govindavadi Channel, Kambakkal Channel and the chain of surplus courses of groups of tanks.
- It supports a substantial portion of irrigation and additional rain-fed agriculture in its upper part, and also provides water supply to Chennai city and its adjoining areas.
