News: A recent Lancet study highlights slowing progress in reducing Maternal Mortality Ratio and challenges in achieving the SDG 2030 target.
About Maternal Mortality

- Maternal Mortality Ratio: It refers to the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births in a given time period.
- India aims to reduce Maternal Mortality Ratio to below 70 deaths per one lakh live births by 2030.
- Maternal Mortality Ratio Trend (Global)
- Global burden: Total maternal deaths were 4 lakh in 2023, showing a high global burden.
- Target achievement: 100 out of 204 countries achieved MMR below 70 by 2023, indicating partial success.
- Uneven progress: 73 countries still have MMR above 140, highlighting serious gaps.
- Developing regions: Majority of deaths occur in developing regions due to inequality in healthcare access.
- Maternal Mortality Ratio Trend (India):
- Long-term decline: Maternal deaths reduced from 19 lakh in 1990 to 24,700 in 2023, showing strong improvement.
- MMR reduction: MMR declined from 508 (1990) to 116 (2023), reflecting nearly 80% reduction.
- Recent trend: As per SRS, MMR declined from 122 (2015-17) to 88 (2021-23), but progress has slowed.
- Global share: India accounts for one-tenth of global maternal deaths, indicating a significant burden.
- Regional disparity: States like Assam and Uttar Pradesh continue to pull down national performance.
