About Kangsabati River
- Origin: The Kangsabati River rises from the Chota Nagpur Plateau in Purulia district near Jhalda (West Bengal), where Saharjhor and Girgiri rivers join together.
- Course:
- The river flows through Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur and Purba Medinipur districts.
- At Keshpur, it splits into two branches, showing an important river feature.
- Tributaries: The Bhairabbanki is an important tributary that joins the river at Binpur.
- Drains into: The river meets Keleghai to form Haldi River, which drains into the Bay of Bengal at Haldia.
- Major Project:
- The Kangsabati Irrigation Project was launched in 1956 to provide irrigation to Bankura, Hooghly and Midnapore districts.
- Mukutmanipur Dam, an earthen gravity dam, was constructed with 1.04 cubic km storage capacity, irrigating about 3,500 sq km area, showing its regional importance.
