  • AZEC operates on the “triple breakthrough” principle, aiming to achieve decarbonisationeconomic growth, and energy security simultaneously.
  • Launched by: It was launched by Japan as part of its broader strategic initiatives.
  • Inception: It was proposed in 2022 and formally launched in March 2023.
  • Partner countries: It includes 11 countries, such as Australia, Japan, and nine ASEAN member states.
  • Aim:
    • It aims to promote cooperation for carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions in Asia.
    • It also focuses on using Japanese technologies, systems, and know-how in hydrogen and ammonia under the Green Transformation strategy.
  • AZEC Plus: The Asia Zero-Emission Community (AZEC) Plus is an upgraded framework of the original AZEC initiative.
  • It was launched on 15 April 2026 by Japan.
  • While the original AZEC focused on regional decarbonisation, “AZEC Plus” (often referred to as AZEC 2.0) integrates sustainability with energy resilience.
