About Umiam Lake

- Umiam Lake is a large manmade reservoir created for hydroelectric power generation in Meghalaya.
- Location: It is located north of Shillong in Meghalaya.
- It is also called the Barapani Lake.
- It is one of the biggest artificial lakes in Meghalaya.
- Surrounded by: It is surrounded by the East Khasi Hills and scenic landscapes.
- Source of Water: The lake receives water from the River Umiam, which is formed by the confluence of Umkhrah and Umshyrpi streams through Wah Ro-ro stream.
- Projects: It is part of the Umiam Umtru Hydroelectric Power Project, which was among the first hydel power projects in northeast India.
- Hydropower Importance: The dam was built mainly for storing water for hydroelectric generation, marking a major regional energy milestone.
- Tourism Value: The lake is a major hub for water sports and boating, attracting visitors with scenic beauty.
