News: A female black panther will be released at Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Visakhapatnam, ending a 40-year gap in display.
About Black Panthers
- A black panther is not a distinct species or breed, but rather a melanistic (black-furred) color variant of big cats, most commonly leopards (Panthera pardus) or jaguars (Panthera onca).
- They have black fur or very dark coats due to high concentration of black pigmentation.
- Distribution:
- Global: Black panthers are found across Asia, Africa, and the Americas, including Southwest China, Nepal, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Burma.
- India: They are reported from Karnataka (Kabini Forest, Nagarhole National Park), Kerala (Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Silent Valley), West Bengal (Sundarbans), and also from Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
- Characteristics:
- Physical Features: They have glossy black or dark brown fur with faint spotted patterns visible under sunlight.
- Eyes: Their emerald green eyes provide a striking and fierce appearance even in darkness.
- Behaviour: They are solitary and territorial hunters with strong intelligence, sharp eyesight, and a powerful sense of smell.
- Melanism: Their black color results from genetic alleles that increase melanin, helping in camouflage in dense forests.
