News: A report by the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust submitted to the National Green Tribunal stressed the need for Adyar River restoration.
About Adyar River

- Adyar River is one of the three rivers of Chennai, along with the Cooum and Kosasthalaiyar.
- Course: The river originates near Chembarambakkam Lake in Kanchipuram district and flows through Chennai before meeting the sea.
- Length: The river has a total length of 42.5 km.
- Drains into: It drains into the Bay of Bengal at the Adyar Estuary.
- Adyar Creek: The river forms a backwater called Adyar Creek near its mouth due to sandbar formation.
- This natural channel carries tidal water back into the sea.
- Ecological Issues: The river is affected by pollution from multiple discharge points, leading to poor water quality and very low dissolved oxygen levels, which harm aquatic life.
