  • Course: The river originates near Chembarambakkam Lake in Kanchipuram district and flows through Chennai before meeting the sea.
  • Length: The river has a total length of 42.5 km.
  • Drains into: It drains into the Bay of Bengal at the Adyar Estuary.
  • Adyar Creek: The river forms a backwater called Adyar Creek near its mouth due to sandbar formation.
    • This natural channel carries tidal water back into the sea.
  • Ecological Issues: The river is affected by pollution from multiple discharge points, leading to poor water quality and very low dissolved oxygen levels, which harm aquatic life.
