  • It is a global science-based panel that provides policy-relevant advice to accelerate transition away from fossil fuels.
  • Launched: It was launched on April 24, 2026 in Santa Marta, Colombia.
  • Origin: Its creation follows calls made during the plenary of COP30  in Belém, Brazil.
  • Mission: It aims to provide fast, science-based, and policy-relevant advice to governments for accelerating energy transition efforts.
  • Objective: It seeks to develop country and sector-level milestones aligned with limiting global warming to 1.5°C and guide fossil fuel phase-out policies.
  • Backing: It is backed by the Brazilian COP30 Presidency and supported by the Dutch Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth and Colombia’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
  • Key Highlights of SPGET:
    • Global Participation: The launch conference brought together representatives from more than 56 countries to build a global coalition.
    • Policy Guidance: It will produce analyses, policy briefs, and country-level engagement to support nationally determined contributions and sectoral strategies.
