News: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India, organised the 35th Plenary and Working Groups meetings of the ISO TC 20 / SC 14 ‘Space Systems and Operations’ subcommittee of International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) at New Delhi.

    • The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) is an independent non-governmental international organisations that develops and publishes standards across industries to ensure safety, efficiency, and quality of products, services, and systems around the world. 
    • Founding year: It was founded in 1946.
    • Headquarters: It is headquartered in Geneva.
    • Members: It has over 172 member countries.
      • India is a member of ISO, represented by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
    • It has over 25,000 standards and brings experts from around the world together to agree on the best ways of making products and managing processes.
    • Scope: It set standards to enhance quality of life by promoting ease, safety, and improvement across various sectors.
      • Their standardisations for compliance serve as benchmarks for best practices, helping organisations meet industry-specific requirements and international regulations.

Activities of ISO

    • It develops and publishes international standards for products, materials, and processes.
    • It creates standards for many fields such as healthcare, technology, agriculture, and engineering.
    • It publishes technical reports, technical specifications, and guides.
    • It helps improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of products and services.
    • Its standards are used worldwide to ensure consistency and reliability. 

About ISO/TC 20/SC 14

    • It is a subcommittee of the ISO. It develops international standards for the entire lifecycle of space systems from design and production to launch, operations, and space-based services, ensuring safety, interoperability, and sustainability in global space activities.

About Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

    • Established: It is the national standard body of India established under the BIS Act 2016.
    • Objective: Its objective is to ensure harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods.
    • Concerned ministry: Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.
    • Headquarters- New Delhi, and its 5 regional Offices (ROs) are at Kolkata (Eastern), Chennai (Southern), Mumbai (Western), Chandigarh (Northern) and Delhi (Central).
