News: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla constituted the Committee on Empowerment of Women and appointed Dr Daggubati Purandeswari as Chairperson.

  • The Committee on Empowerment of Women is a Joint Parliamentary Committee formed to promote women’s empowerment across party lines.
  • Establishment: It was constituted for the first time in 1997 during the 11th Lok Sabha.
  • Composition: It consists of 30 members, including 20 members nominated by the Speaker from the Lok Sabha and 10 members nominated by the Chairman from the Rajya Sabha.
  • Tenure: The term of the committee does not exceed one year and it is reconstituted every year.
  • Functions:
    • Studying Reports Related to Women: It studies the reports submitted by the National Commission for Women and suggests steps that the Union Government can take to improve the condition of women.
    • Assessing Equality Measures: It reviews the efforts made by the Union Government to ensure equality, dignity, and better status for women in different areas.
    • Reviewing Education and Representation: It examines government measures aimed at providing proper education and increasing women’s participation in legislative bodies, services, and other sectors.
    • Evaluating Welfare Schemes: It assesses the functioning of welfare programmes designed for women and reviews their overall progress.
    • Checking Implementation of Recommendations: It monitors the action taken by the Union Government and Union Territory administrations on the recommendations and measures suggested earlier.
    • Examining Other Women-Related Issues: It also studies other matters connected with women’s empowerment that may be referred to it by the House, the Speaker of Lok Sabha , or the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha
