Sanjana Wins Three Bronze Medals at Asian Weightlifting Championship

  • The Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 is six days of high-level competition featuring Asia’s top weightlifters.
  • Hosted by: It was hosted by India from May 10 to 17 at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • Organised by: It was organised by the Asian Weightlifting Federation.
  • The tournament has been held since 1969 for men and 1988 for women. 
  • It also served as an important qualification pathway for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
  • Positions: China finished at the top of the final medal standings with a total of 41 medals, DPR Korea followed in second place with 30 medals, while Chinese Taipei completed the top three with 13 medals. 
    • Bahrain, Iran, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Korea and India also secured podium finishes throughout the tournament.
  • World Achievements: A total of 27 Asian records and 25 world records, including Senior and Junior categories, were set during the championships.
    • Mens Categories: China topped in the men’s category, followed by North Korea, Uzbekistan,Chinese Taipei and India (5th Position).
    • Womens categories: China topped in the women’s category also, followed by Chinese Taipei, and India (3rd Position).
    • In total, athletes from 15 countries reached the podium during the championships.
  • India’s Achievement: India secured 10 medals, including 1 silver and 9 bronze medals, reflecting the nation’s growing competitiveness in Asian weightlifting.
    • Sanjana from India has won three bronze medals in the Women’s 77 kg category. She lifted 96 kg in the snatch, 124 kg in the clean and jerk, and a total of 220 kg to claim three bronze medals.
