  • Lisima Plateau is a remote and ecologically vital highland region in eastern Angola, known as a major biodiversity hotspot.
  • Location: It is located in eastern Angola’s Moxico Province within the upper Cassai catchment area.
  • Hydrological significance: The Lisima landscape lies within the Angolan Highlands Water Tower and feeds the Okavango, Zambezi, Congo, and Cuanza river systems.
  • Support to Ecosystems: Water from the plateau sustains ecosystems and communities thousands of km downstream, including the UNESCO-listed Okavango Delta.
  • Biodiversity “Blank Spot”: Decades of civil war, persistent landmines, and extreme remoteness left the region largely unexplored by scientists despite its ecological importance.
