News: The Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) dismantled an interstate Mephedrone manufacturing laboratory in Pune.
About Operation Vajra

- Operation Vajra is an operation against an interstate synthetic drug trafficking syndicate led by the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN).
- Led by: The operation was carried out by the Preventive Branch of the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), Madhya Pradesh.
- Legal Framework: The arrests, seizures, and possession of machinery, equipment, and chemicals were carried out under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
- Aim: The operation aims to dismantle organised drug trafficking networks and support the national vision of a Drug-Free India (Nasha Mukt Bharat).
- Interstate Footprint: The investigation and coordinated operations were conducted between 1st–10th July 2026 across Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, leading to the dismantling of a sophisticated laboratory in Pune.
About Mephedrone (MD)
- Mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone or 4-MMC) is a synthetic stimulant belonging to the amphetamine and cathinone chemical classes.
- Street Names: It is popularly known as “Meow Meow”, “MD”, “M-CAT”, “Drone”, or “White Magic”.
- Effects: It acts as a central nervous system stimulant, causing temporary euphoria, alertness, and severe physiological dependency.
- Health Hazards: It has been linked to adverse physical and mental health effects.
- Short-term use may cause anxiety, paranoia, nausea, and insomnia, while prolonged use may lead to cardiovascular problems, hallucinations, aggressive behaviour, addiction, and long-term psychological harm.
- Environmental Concern: Mephedrone acts as a xenobiotic and an environmental contaminant, raising concerns about its presence in the environment.
- Regulatory Status in India: It is strictly banned and classified as a psychotropic substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
- Dual-Use Precursors: The raw materials used to manufacture MD are often regular industrial chemicals, making it extremely difficult to track their diversion from legitimate pharmaceutical industries into illegal cartels.
