News: Israel and Greece signed a nearly €3.1 billion defence deal to build a multilayered air-defence network called Achilles Shield.

  • Achilles Shield is a unified, multilayered air-defence and ballistic-missile defence network.
  • Developed by: It is being developed by Israel and is being established for Greece.
  • Objective: The main objective is to create a unified and interoperable national air-defence network covering different ranges and threats.
  • Key Features:
    • Three Core Systems: Achilles Shield comprises three core systems –
      • David’s Sling: It is designed to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and medium-to-long-range rockets from 40 km to 300 km.
      • SPYDER: It is designed to engage low-altitude aerial threats such as aircraft, helicopters, drones, and guided munitions.
      • BARAK MX: It can engage cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, fighter jets, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles from 35 km to 150 km.
    • Integrated Network: The system uses Israeli-made radars and a national command and control system to connect different defence systems into one network.
    • Interoperability: The Israeli systems will work with Greece’s existing defence assets, including Patriot batteries, Belharra frigates, Rafale and F-16 Viper aircraft.
