  • Sulphuric acid is a strong mineral acid.
  • Its formula is H2SO4.
  • Production: Its production involves a multi-step process, widely known as the Contact Process or the sulfuric acid manufacturing process.
    • This process converts sulfur dioxide (SO2) into sulfuric acid (H2SO4).
    • The raw materials used for the sulfuric acid production include sulfur containing gases obtained by burning of elemental sulfur, pyrites or off gases from metallurgical industry.
  • Properties:
    • It is soluble in water at all concentrations.
    • It is odourless in its pure state but commercial or diluted forms may give off irritating, acidic fumes in humid air.
    • It is a clear, colourless, oily liquid.
    • It is very reactive and corrosive.
    • It is soluble in water and ethyl alcohol.
  • Application:
    • It is an important industrial chemical used in agriculture, petroleum processing, metallurgy, energy storage, and chemical manufacturing.
    • Fertilizers: It is used to make phosphate fertilizers needed for agriculture.
    • Petroleum and chemicals: It helps improve gasoline quality, remove impurities, and produce detergents, resins, dyes, and other chemicals.
    • Metallurgy: It removes rust and scale from metals before further processing.
    • Batteries: Dilute sulfuric acid acts as the electrolyte in lead-acid batteries used in vehicles and backup power systems.
    • Laboratory uses: It is used as a strong acid and dehydrating agent in laboratories. Oleum (a related form of sulfuric acid) is used to make dyes and specialized organic chemicals.
