News: INS Mysore arrived at Lumut, Malaysia, to take part in the fourth edition of the bilateral naval exercise Samudra Laksamana alongside the Royal Malaysian Navy.

  • Exercise Samudra Laksamana is a bilateral Naval exercise between India and Malaysia, contributing to maritime cooperation and interoperability.
  • 2026 Host: It commenced on September 9, 2026, at the Lumut Naval Base, Malaysia.
  • Edition: It is the 4th edition of the exercise.
    • The first edition of the exercise took place in 2019.
  • Aim: The joint exercise is aimed at strengthening bonds and enhancing interoperability between the two navies.
  • Contingents: The exercise involves the Indian Navy and Royal Malaysian Navy.
    • Indian Participant: INS Mysore (a Delhi-class guided-missile destroyer)
    • Malaysian Participants: Royal Malaysian Navy ships KD Lekir and KD Gagah Samudera.
  • Features:
    • It comprises professional engagements in harbour and at sea, including cross-deck visits, operational interactions and sporting engagements.
    • These activities will provide opportunities for personnel of both navies to exchange professional experiences, enhance interoperability and foster greater mutual understanding.

About INS Mysore

  • INS Mysore (D60) is a Delhi-class guided missile destroyer of the Indian Navy.
  • It was built at Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai.
  • It was commissioned in 1999.
  • It is designed for multi-role naval operations, including air defence, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and fleet escort missions.
  • Features
    • Engine: It is powered by a gas turbine linked to marine diesel engines.
      • Gas turbines are used to provide the extra thrust, while diesel engines provide the required cruising power.
    • Speed: It has a speed of 32 knots and a range of 5,000 miles.
    • Size: Its length is 535 feet and has a displacement of 6,835 tons.
    • It has two medium helicopters and their crews, supported by a hangar and helipad at the stern.
    • It is equipped with state-of-the-art radar, communications, and sensor equipment, as well as a hull-mounted variable depth sonar system.
    • Weapons include a mix of rocket and projectile-guided weapons.
