News: Recently, UNESCO presented the 2026 International Literacy Prizes during the International Literacy Day global function ceremony held in the state of Chiapas, Mexico.

  • International Literacy Prizes is a premier global awards recognizing outstanding literacy programmes from around the world.
  • Administered by: They are administered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
  • Institution year: They were instituted in 1967.
  • Conferred on: They are presented annually around International Literacy Day (September 8th). 
  • They have honored more than 600 individuals, institutions, and non-governmental organizations for their grassroots field initiatives. 

About UNESCO International Literacy Prizes 2026

  • Six outstanding literacy programmes from Colombia, Lebanon, Mexico, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Nigeria and Thailand have been awarded the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes for their exceptional contributions to advancing literacy across the globe.
  • Categories: It is currently awarded across two distinct sponsored categories:
    • UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize (3 awards): 
      • It was established in 1989 with support from the Government of the Republic of Korea.
      • It is named after King Sejong the Great (creator of the Korean Hangul script).
    • UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy (3 awards): 
      • It was established in 2005 with support from the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
      • It is named after the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius.
  • Prize: Each laureate receives a medal, a diploma and US$ 30,000.

About International Literacy Day 2026

  • International Literacy Day is a global celebration to remind policy-makers, practitioners, and the public of the critical importance of literacy for creating a more literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable society.
  • Origin: It was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966 at its 14th General Conference. 
    • It was first celebrated in 1967. 
  • About International Literacy Day 2026:
    • Organised by: It was organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the Government of Mexico.
    • It was held from 8 – 9 September 2026 in the State of Chiapas, Mexico.
    • Theme 2026: ‘Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity’
