News: Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister felicitated the Guneri Inland Mangrove Village Biodiversity Management Committee for its sustained efforts to conserve the Guneri inland mangroves.
About Guneri Inland Mangrove
- Guneri Inland Mangrove is a natural inland mangrove site located in Kutch district of Gujarat.
- It is located at a distance of 45 km from the Arabian Sea and 4 km from the Kori Creek, where seawater never approaches.
- Uniqueness: It is one of only eight known inland mangrove locations in the world and the last of its kind in India.
- Recognition: It was declared Gujarat’s first Biodiversity Heritage Site in January 2025.
- Area: It spreads over 33 hectares including the buffer zone.
- Formation: It may have originated either after the Miocene-period marine transgression or along the banks of the lost Saraswati River in the Great Rann of Kachchh, which is believed to have existed around 3000–4000 BC.
- The mangroves survive on limestone deposits connected to the seabed, which allow a continuous flow of groundwater.
- Features
- It has inland mangrove of considerable height.
- It is devoid of any sludge, and is spread over a flat piece of land like a forest.
- It is unique as it grows inland, away from regular seawater and muddy coastal conditions.
- Unlike typical coastal mangroves, it supports Avicennia marina through underground saline water and tidal influence from nearby Kori Creek.
- It is also a unique example of nature’s adaptation and resilience in an arid region.
- Fauna: The Guneri inland mangrove area houses chinkara, ratel, around 20 migratory and 25 resident migratory avifaunal species.
